Why fiber-reinforced polymers?

We on­­­­­­ly use con­t­in­u­ous fiber-re­in­­­­­­­forced ther­­­­­­mo­­­­­­plas­tics as ma­te­ri­al­s. They of­fer nu­mer­ous ad­­­­­­van­­­­­­tages over un­re­in­­­­­­forced plas­tics and met­al­s.

Lightweight Design

A clas­sic ex­am­­­­­­­ple of the weight sav­ings achieved through the ef­fec­­­­­­­tive use of fiber-re­in­­­­­­­forced com­­­­­­­pos­ites is the Boe­ing 787 Dream­lin­er. In this air­craft, around 50% of the pri­­­­­­­ma­ry struc­­­­­­­ture, in­­­­­­­­­­­­­clud­ing the fuse­lage and wings, is made of fiber-re­in­­­­­­­forced com­­­­­­­pos­ites. By re­­­­­­­duc­ing weight, fu­el ef­­­­­­­fi­­­­­­­cien­­­­­­­cy and range can be im­proved, re­­­­­­­sult­ing in sig­nif­i­­­­­­­cant cost sav­ings.

Harnessing Potential

We start with the material

Fiber-re­in­­­­­­­forced ther­­­­­­­mo­­­­­­­plas­tics of­fer out­­­­­­­­s­­­­­­tand­ing tech­ni­­­­­­­cal prop­er­ties. Their full po­ten­­­­­­­tial is on­­­­­­­ly re­al­ized when fibers and ma­trix are tai­lored to the spe­­­­­­­cif­ic ap­­­­­­­pli­­­­­­­ca­­­­­­­tion. Since not ev­ery ma­te­ri­al com­bi­­­­­­­na­­­­­­­tion is avail­able on the mar­ket, per­­­­­­­for­­­­­­­mance of­ten re­­­­­­­mains un­­­­­­­tapped. With our pro­pri­e­­­­­­tary pro­­­­­­­duc­­­­­­­tion pro­cess, we en­­­­­­­sure pre­­­­­­­cise ma­te­ri­al se­lec­­­­­­­tion and high­­­­­­­est qual­i­­­­­­­ty – for com­po­­­­­­­nents that far ex­ceed con­ven­­­­­­­tion­al stan­­­­­­­dard­­­­­­­s.

Analysis and Design

To de­vel­op high-qual­i­­­­­­­ty com­po­­­­­­­nents from fiber-re­in­­­­­­­forced ther­­­­­­­mo­­­­­­­plas­tic­s, a deep un­der­­s­­­­­­tand­ing of ma­te­ri­al be­hav­ior is es­­­­­­­sen­­­­­­­tial. Since we pro­­­­­­­duce and com­pre­hen­­­­­­­sive­­­­­­­ly char­ac­ter­ize our own ma­te­ri­al­s, we can pre­­­­­­­cise­­­­­­­ly mod­­­­­­­el their ful­­­­­­­ly non­lin­ear be­hav­ior up to fail­ure, en­abling tar­get­ed de­sign of com­po­­­­­­­nents with op­ti­­­­­­­mal ma­te­ri­al uti­l­iza­­­­­­­­­­­­­tion.

Com­po­­­­­­­nents made of fiber-re­in­­­­­­­forced ther­­­­­­­mo­­­­­­­plas­tics im­­­­­­­pose spe­­­­­­­cial de­­­­­­­mands on de­sign and man­u­­­­­­­fac­­­­­­­tur­ing. Be­­­­­­­cause ma­te­ri­al prop­er­ties and process con­trol are in­­­­­­­sep­a­ra­bly linked, we de­vel­op fiber-com­­­­­­­pli­ant com­po­­­­­­­nents tai­lored to each man­u­­­­­­­fac­­­­­­­tur­ing method. By ful­­­­­­­ly map­ping the process chain, we elim­i­­­­­­­nate in­­­­­­­ter­­­­­­­faces, re­­­­­­­duce de­vel­op­­­­­­­ment time, and de­liv­er high-per­­­­­­­for­­­­­­­mance, cus­­­­­­­tomer-spe­­­­­­­cif­ic so­lu­­­­­­­tions with max­i­­­­­­­mum ef­­­­­­­fi­­­­­­­cien­­­­­­­cy.
